Remove metadata from HEIC / HEIF
See every hidden field in your HEIC / HEIF image, then strip it — with the pixels copied through untouched.
Where HEIC / HEIF keeps its metadata
HEIC uses the ISO Base Media container. Metadata is stored as separate items, with an iinf box naming each item and an iloc box recording exactly where its bytes sit in the file.
How we remove it
Deleting those bytes would invalidate every offset in the iloc table, so instead we overwrite the metadata item payloads in place with zeros. The file stays structurally valid, every offset still resolves, and the image data is never touched.
Worth knowing about HEIC / HEIF
- This is the default format on iPhone, which means it is the format most likely to carry your GPS coordinates.
- Because the erase is in place, the cleaned file is the same size as the original. That is expected, not a bug — the metadata is gone, its former space is just zeroed.
- HEIC files can hold several images (bursts, Live Photo stills, depth maps). Each carries its own metadata, and all of it is handled.
- Browsers cannot always decode HEIC, so the pixel-comparison step may report "not compared". The removal itself is unaffected.
